Personal circ*mstances can affect us at work in a vast range of ways. Caring responsibilities, neurodivergence and disability, mental health, and the need to balance a range of priorities in our lives all have the potential to clash with our work schedules and responsibilities. In this session we explore the different ways in which our personal situations can impact on us at work and vice versa, and explore ways to find wellbeing and balance. In the third session of our new series – Science culture: taboos and tricky topics, we explore the question: “How do we find a work-life balance in an academic career?” 2pm UK time, 17 April 2024, live on our LinkedIn and YouTube channels. You can suggest questions and comments any time from now. Find out more and submit your questions: https://rsc.li/3POGvtU

Toon Taris and I wrote a review paper entitled “Workaholism: Taking Stock and Looking Forward” that is published in Annual Review of Organizational Psychology and Organizational Behavior.Happy to announce that it is online available now (open access):https://lnkd.in/eCQcTmifDrawing on 50 years of research, our review paper defines workaholism as involving high motivation (e.g., being driven to work due to internal pressures) as well as high effort expenditure (e.g., having persistent thoughts about work when not working and working beyond what can reasonably be expected). Workaholism can be distinguished from concepts such as work engagement, work passion, and Type-A behavior, and valid workaholism measures are available. Regarding its antecedents, demographic and personality factors are weakly related to workaholism. Work-related factors (such as the presence of an overwork culture and high job demands) are more important. Workaholism may have adverse outcomes for a worker’s mental and physical health, well-being, and family life. Workaholics do not perform better (but may well perform worse) than others. Although many interventions have been put forward to address workaholism, the effects of these are usually unclear. We conclude with a short agenda for future research.

🌟Finding My Path: From Studying Minds to Building Better Workplaces🌟"Why corporate instead of clinical?" It's a question that echoes my journey in psychology. The answer lies in a heartfelt acknowledgment of personal boundaries and a deep passion for Organizational Psychology.Choosing not to delve into clinical or counseling psychology wasn't a lack of interest; it was about understanding my own anxiety and the potential toll it could take in one-on-one sessions. Instead, I found my calling in Organizational Psychology—a field where I can contribute to workplace culture and collective well-being.Organizational Psychology, for me, is a bridge between personal struggles and professional aspirations. By focusing on the broader canvas of workplace dynamics, I aim to create environments where everyone can flourish. In this journey, I've found a sweet spot where my personal feelings and professional goals meet. Let's paint workplaces with positivity and help everyone shine. 💼🎨 #organizationalpsychology #myjourney #mentalhealthmatters #happyworkplaces
